MHC Memo

As you know, health systems across the nation are moving from a volume-based model to a value-based framework. This shift has prompted health systems everywhere to explore new and innovative ways to work together while remaining independent. The Independent Hospital Network we helped to establish in 1996 was an early example of this collaborative approach. Now, Aultman has identified another opportunity at a statewide level.

We are excited to announce a new partnership with five other leading health systems in Ohio -- the Midwest Health Collaborative (MHC), comprised of the following health systems:

  • Aultman – Canton and northeast Ohio
  • Cleveland Clinic – Cleveland and northeast Ohio
  • OhioHealth – Columbus, north central and southeast Ohio
  • Premier Health – Dayton and southwest Ohio
  • ProMedica – Toledo, northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan
  • TriHealth – Cincinnati and southwest Ohio

Representing 40 hospitals and hundreds of care sites across Ohio, the MHC mission is to improve the value of health care services through a commitment to coordinated, patient-centered care, the development of standardized care pathways and the use of data and information to enhance the care delivered to patients in our community.

The MHC is a partnership among organizations with a long history of mutual respect. We also share a common vision to transform health care by addressing current and emerging national issues while strengthening our local communities. Aultman will remain independent and will work with our MHC partners to:

  • Create a statewide provider network.
  • Exchange best practices.
  • Share resources.
  • Reduce costs.
  • Develop innovative ways to deliver health care across large populations.
  • Reduce variations in care from one provider to another.

By sharing best practices, we can enhance the high-quality care and service excellence we already provide to patients and their families. This will bring talented team members together to find solutions to expand access to medical care, enhance quality, improve the patient experience and reduce costs.

Considerable research was conducted to identify potential benefits of such a collaboration in Ohio. Along with our MHC colleagues, we recognize the strength of the collaborative and the benefits of pooling resources to positively impact the communities we serve.

This collaboration aligns well with our updated vision statement and our future focus on population health. We want to be known as the leading health system in our community, delivering the highest quality, achieving service excellence, offering a competitive price and innovating toward disease management and wellness. As we turn to a population health model, a higher level of collaboration with other health systems will help us achieve that vision.

We look forward to working with the MHC organizations, as we strive to improve patient care and fulfill our mission to “Lead Our Community to Improved Health” and I am very pleased to share this news with you today.
